The Department of Legal Studies at CEU provides high-quality advanced legal education and education in human rights, comparative constitutional law, and international business law. Accredited in the U.S. and Austria and listed among the TOP 150 in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021, our world-class programs enable students to obtain a solid grounding in fundamental legal concepts in civil law and common law systems and to develop unique skills in comparative analysis. Our students are encouraged to see complex legal and social problems in their broader context and seek solutions across continents and disciplines.

LLM in Comparative Constitutional Law: Explore how constitutions contribute to good government in the age of globalization and the rise of illiberal governments in the world’s only LLM program of its kind.

LLM/MA in Human Rights: Get theoretical and practical training in human rights, with special emphasis on the legal aspects of human rights protection, and engage in comparative and interdisciplinary analysis of complex human rights problems.

LLM in Global Business Law and Regulation*: Acquire specialist knowledge of the legal setting of business transactions in a global environment, from regulatory frameworks to dispute resolution, and gain hands-on experience in clinical courses with local start-up companies.

Our programs in Legal Studies equip students with skills for successful careers in a wide range of industries all around the world. The majority of our alumni work in government, law, international affairs and public policy in organizations such as the Council of Europe, European Court of Justice and Baker McKenzie. Our law graduates are also employed in business, finance, consulting, management, manufacturing and sales sectors by companies like the Big4, BlackRock, CBS Consulting International, and McKinsey and Company. Some of our alumni pursue further education and conduct research at institutions such as American University, Kozminski University, and the Academy of Helsinki. Other graduates choose to continue down a different path, going into activism, philanthropy, social impact, international development and humanitarian aid in organizations like Amnesty International, Helsinki Committee, EBRD, International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

In terms of broader career outcomes, in 2019, roughly 88% of CEU master’s graduates were employed or engaged in continuing studies within 6 months of graduation.
